Benedicta Bertau: with the flow

workshops & events: call of the self. building community. experiencing & creating culture

Are you longing for meaning and creativity?

Do you wish for more non-virtual, human connection and true relationships - and the courage to step into these?

Do you believe in the transformative power of culture, beauty, and humanity in the best sense of each of these words?

As a performance/theater artist and teacher, I am dedicated to creating experiences in which human beings can re-connect with their creative individuality, and with each other. Being creative is a way to meet life, not a privilege or luxury reserved for "artists." Understanding each individual as a unique being with a physical body, soul, and spirit on an ever-evolving journey, I take movement and the arts of speech, theater, and improvisation as my point of entry.  To involve every aspect of the person, I use conversation and play, ritual and fun, hands-on activities and meditation - we are multi-faceted, and I am here to serve the unleashing of every person's potential. In a multitude of ways. In conversation with you.

...son placide

tutte le ore

che noi perdiamo,

se nel perderle,

come in un vaso

mettiamo fiori.

Are you on your way, but don't know where?
Do you long for being creative, but don't know how?
Are you longing for true, deep, cup-filling soul nourishment?

When I look around me, when I read the paper, when I see how people live - I experience a great need for awakening to who we are and what we can do as human beings. I think the future of our health and sanity, and that of our planet depend on it.

I use technology on a daily basis, and I am grateful for it. But I am absolutely certain that it will NOT save our humanity. We must do that ourselves, and with each other's help.

I create workshops where real people make real experiences: Wake up to yourself as a thinking, feeling, willing being. Move your body not as a mere machine or architectural construct, but as your instrument for life on earth. Experience the dynamics of space and your relationship to them. Wake up your voice, the power of clear emotional response, the pure joy of thinking your own thoughts. Hone your conversation skills. Dip into the great stream of human culture. Learn to improvise and play. Laugh.

No machine will ever be able to do this for you – even though it might well fool you into believing it can.

Workshops can be tailor-made for almost any context and circumstance – arts centers, businesses, associations, educational institutions, detention centers, private events, retreats... contact me with your request.

Workshop lengths vary also according to need and circumstance. The absolute minimum would be 90 minutes.

Here are some examples for workshops:

no time to rush

unleashing the power of intention joyfully - 3-part workshop for starting a new year, a new project, a new day
including movement, play, conversation, hands-on activity

A new beginning! How can we enter it with ever deeper presence, kindness, effectiveness? What if we could dive with joyful intention into this new year, into this new project, into our life? In this workshop, we approach this question in a variety of ways, inviting many aspects of our Self into the process. We will share food, have conversations, enjoy the silence of meditation and writing, we will move and play together, and use our hands to shape an inspiring vision for our year ahead.

that delicious and important place

connect with the joy of creating, being fully present
a workshop with movement, speech, theater

As children, we bring the vast resources of creativity and imagination with us, as well as the ability to be fully "in the moment." Education, life, and a host of other factors contribute to dampen these skills, and it is often difficult to feel easily connected to our innate ability to be ourselves freely, to listen and to speak clearly, to create.
Through movement and theatrical exercises, as well as improvisation games, participants are invited to awaken and strengthen the perception of their body and of their creative individuality. We will begin to revive our whole being to become an instrument of perception of space and of the other, of the group. You will work with the spoken word, sometimes in a playfully poetic, sometimes in a more firmly theatrical approach. Freeing the imagination, integrating the voice with body and space, becoming powerful and sensitive while at the same time awakening to what is happening - these are the joyful principles of this course.

aesthetic shock - beauty is transformative

seeing, experiencing, finding new language for and expressing beauty
a workshop for radical explorers

The "aesthetic shock" is the experience that happens in the moment one stands in the face of a work of art. It does not happen with all art, it is a completely individual response and maybe it even happens in the face of nature. What is this experience? Through observation, movement, improvisation, and speech work, we'll approach the mysterious “sense of beauty,” as the Russian actor and theater teacher Michael Chekhov referred to it. Participants are invited on a creative and enlivening journey to notice how nourishing and important beauty is – to our souls, to our lives, to community.
This is the perfect workshop for celebrating being human, for creating a new perception among members of a long-term collaborative, for a retreat, or to start a new venture.

Ease, Form, Beauty, and the Whole

Michael Chekhov says “In every true, great piece of art you will always find four qualities which the artist has put into his creation: Ease, Form, Beauty, and Entirety(“To the Actor”). And, in his “Lessons for the Professional Actor,” Michael Chekhov says that the “how is the mystery of art.”

In this three or five component experiential course for actors and artists of all disciplines, we will explore these statements and how they are connected. We will do so in a variety of ways – through playful movement and ensemble exercises, through improvisation and the spoken word, through observation, writing, and conversation.

The 2nd or 3rd component of this course is spent going to the museum, a concert and/or theater event, so course participants can experience the mystery of other people's Creative Selves in action, ask new questions, and exercise their new-found (or renewed) perception of art.

The objective of this work is to stir and expand our Creative Self's perceptions and vocabulary – in relationship to our own work, to the other, to (cultural) life.

What is Ease? What is Form? What is Beauty? What makes an experience artistic?

Does it matter to ask these questions?

To live in love towards our actions, and to let live in the understanding of the other person's will,  is the fundamental maxim of the free human being.
